How to type Hindi by sound
Spell the word in Latin letters and the Devanagari appears as you type, one word at a time; a space or punctuation mark finishes the word. The spelling follows ITRANS, a published romanization scheme, so the same spelling always gives the same result: namaste gives नमस्ते, dhanyavaad gives धन्यवाद.
Long vowels are doubled or written as a capital: aa or A for आ, ii, ee or I for ई, uu, oo or U for ऊ. So bhaarat gives भारत and hindii gives हिन्दी. A single a after a consonant is the short vowel already inside the letter, which means मेरा is typed meraa.
Capitals mark the retroflex letters: t is त and T is ट, d is द and D is ड, n is न and N is ण, sh is श and Sh is ष. M adds the anusvara, so haiM gives हैं, and .N adds the chandrabindu ँ.
Consonants that meet join by themselves: kyaa gives क्या. The period types the danda ।. For borrowed sounds, z gives ज़, f gives फ़ and q gives क़. If you already know the Hindi keyboard, pick Devanagari - INSCRIPT in the Layout menu instead.
