How to type Amharic

This keyboard types Amharic by sound on an English keyboard, with the phonetic layout of the Geʾez Frontier Foundation. A consonant key types the consonant on its own (l gives ል), and a vowel after it turns it into the syllable: le gives ለ, lu gives ሉ, li gives ሊ, la gives ላ, lie gives ሌ, lo gives ሎ.

Whole words work the same way: selam gives ሰላም (hello), amarNa gives አማርኛ (Amharic), ityoPya gives ኢትዮጵያ (Ethiopia).

Capital letters give the related consonants: t is ት and T is ጥ, s is ስ and S is ጽ, k is ክ and K is ኽ, n is ን and N is ኝ, c is ች and C is ጭ, p is ፕ and P is ጵ. A vowel on its own gives the vowel letter: a is አ, u is ኡ, i is ኢ, o is ኦ.

Punctuation follows the Ethiopic marks: : types the word space ፡, two colons give the full stop ።, the comma gives ፣ and the semicolon ፤. For Ethiopic numerals type # and then the number: #1 gives ፩, #10 gives ፲ and #100 gives ፻.

To stop two keys from joining, put an apostrophe between them: l'e gives ልእ.
