Online Notepad

Write notes that save as you type, in this browser. No account, nothing uploaded. Pick a keyboard to write in any of 70 languages.

Notes stay in this browser on this device. Back them up to move them or keep them safe.

How this online notepad works

Type in the box. Every change saves by itself a moment later, and the line under the box says when it last saved. New note starts another one; your notes are listed by the last time you changed them, with the first line as the title. Search notes finds a note by any word in it.

  • Copy puts the whole note on your clipboard, Save .txt downloads it as a text file and Print prints only the note.
  • Delete removes the note, with an Undo button for a few seconds.
  • A− and A+ change the text size, and Focus hides the list so only your writing is on the screen.

Where your notes are saved

Notes are kept in this browser's local storage on this device. They are never sent to this site or anyone else, and there is no account. That also means they are not on your other devices: to move them, press Back up all notes to download one file, then Import notes on the other device. Import also takes plain .txt files, one note each.

Notes stay until you delete them or clear this site's data in your browser. A private or incognito window forgets them when it closes. If you have the notepad open in two tabs, the one you typed in last wins.

Write notes in any language

Choose a Keyboard under the notepad to write in one of 70 languages. An on-screen keyboard for that language appears, and your own keyboard types it by key position, so an English keyboard can write Arabic, Hindi or Russian. Press Esc to type normally again. Languages with several layouts have a Layout menu, and the notepad remembers your choice.

The same keyboards have their own pages with the alphabet, typing guides and practice: Arabic, Korean, Russian, Japanese, Hindi, Amharic and the other 64.

Share a note as a link

Share link copies a link that contains the note itself, packed into the part after the # sign. Browsers do not send that part to the server, so the note travels only to the people you give the link to. Opening the link asks before it adds the note to their list. Anyone with the link can read the note, so do not share passwords this way. Very long notes do not fit in a link; use Save .txt for those.

Keyboard shortcuts

  • Ctrl+S (Cmd+S on a Mac) saves straight away instead of opening the browser's save dialog.
  • Esc switches the language keyboard off and on while you type.
  • Undo and redo work as in any text box: Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Y, or Cmd+Z and Cmd+Shift+Z.

Questions

Where are my notes saved?

In this browser on this device, in its local storage. They are not uploaded, so they are not on your other devices or browsers. Use Back up all notes to keep a copy or move them.

Will my notes disappear?

They stay until you delete them or clear this site's data in your browser settings. A private or incognito window deletes them when it closes, so back them up first.

Can I write notes in other languages?

Yes. Pick a keyboard under the notepad: an on-screen keyboard for that language appears, and your own keyboard types that language by key position. Press Esc to switch it off.

How does Share link work?

The note is packed into the part of the link after the # sign. Browsers never send that part to a server, so the note goes only to the people you give the link to.

Do I need an account?

No. There is no sign-up and nothing to install.
