How the Hindi typing test works

Choose a length and Paragraph or Common words, then type the text in the box. The clock starts with your first key. Press Space after each word: it turns green when it is right and red when it is not. When time runs out you get your WPM (words per minute), your gross WPM, your accuracy and a list of every wrong word next to what you typed.

Paragraph mode uses 400 sentences from Hindi Wikipedia, so you type real running text with full stops (।) and commas. Common words mode uses the 200 most common Hindi words.

InScript or by sound?

  • InScript (the default) is the standard Indian layout that comes with Windows, macOS, Android and iOS. Vowel signs sit on the left of the keyboard and consonants on the right. Exams that ask for Unicode or the Mangal font usually allow it.
  • InScript Traditional is the older Windows version of the same layout.
  • Hindi by sound lets you spell each word in Latin letters (namaste gives नमस्ते). Good for practising if you do not know a Hindi layout; exams do not use it.

Your physical keyboard types Hindi by key position, so an English keyboard works. Press Esc to switch it off. Show keys shows the English keys for the next word: for InScript the keys to press, for by sound the spelling.

How speed is counted

  • WPM (words per minute): correctly typed words per minute, the net speed. A word with one wrong letter does not count.
  • Gross WPM: all words you typed per minute, right or wrong.
  • Accuracy: correct words divided by typed words.

Government typing tests set their own length, layout choice, scoring and pass mark, and some count speed in keystrokes rather than words. Use this test to practise, and check the official notice of your exam for its rules.

Mangal, Kruti Dev and Remington

Mangal is the Hindi font in Windows; it shows Unicode text, the same text this test uses. Kruti Dev is an older font that is not Unicode and is typed with the Remington layout. This test does not cover Kruti Dev, and the Remington GAIL layout is not on this site yet: every layout here comes from a published source, and we have not found one for Remington GAIL that we can cite.

Questions

Which keyboard layout should I use for a Hindi typing test?

Use the layout your exam or job allows. InScript is the standard Indian layout built into Windows, macOS, Android and iOS. Hindi by sound suits people who know Hindi but not a Hindi layout; it is not used in exams.

Can I type Hindi here with an English keyboard?

Yes. Keys are read by their position, so on an English keyboard the K key types क with InScript. Turn on Show keys to see which English keys make each word.

How is Hindi typing speed counted here?

Your WPM (words per minute) is the number of correctly typed words per minute. Gross WPM counts every word you typed. Accuracy is correct words divided by typed words. Exams can count differently, for example by keystrokes, so check your exam notice for its rules and pass mark.

Is this a Kruti Dev or Remington typing test?

No. This test types Unicode Hindi, the text used by the Mangal font in Windows. Kruti Dev is an older non-Unicode font typed with the Remington layout, which this site does not have yet.

Is anything I type sent anywhere?

No. The test runs in your browser and your best result stays there.
