The full romaji chart

Each cell shows the hiragana, the katakana and the romaji that types it. The chart comes from Google's mozc input method table (322 rules), which the Japanese keyboard on this site uses, so every spelling shown here works when you type.

Two spellings for the same kana

23 kana can be typed more than one way. The table accepts both Hepburn spellings, the ones you see on signs and in textbooks, and Kunrei-shiki spellings, which follow the kana rows more strictly:

Combined sounds (yoon)

A consonant plus y and a vowel gives a kana with a small ゃ, ゅ or ょ:

How to type small tsu (っ)

Double the next consonant: kitte gives きって, matcha gives まっちゃ, zasshi gives ざっし. To type っ on its own, use xtu or ltu. The same x or l prefix gives every small kana: ぁ la / xa, ぃ li / xi / lyi / xyi, ぅ lu / xu, ぇ le / xe / lye / xye, ぉ lo / xo, っ ltu / xtu / ltsu / xtsu, ゃ lya / xya, ゅ lyu / xyu, ょ lyo / xyo, ゎ lwa / xwa.

How to type ん

Type nn. A single n turns into ん by itself when the next letter cannot follow it (kanji gives かんじ), but before a vowel or a y you need nn: konnnichiha gives こんにちは, while konnichiha gives こんいちは. n' also gives ん.

Long vowels and punctuation

• - types the long vowel mark ー, as in ra-men for らーめん.
• . and , type 。 and 、; [ and ] type 「 and 」.
• z/ types ・, z. types …, ~ types 〜.
• Long vowels inside words are written with a vowel kana: とうきょう is typed toukyou.

Switch on Katakana to type the same spellings as カタカナ. Loanwords use combinations that plain kana rows do not have; the table covers them:

Questions

How do I type small tsu in romaji?

Double the consonant after it (kitte gives きって), or type xtu or ltu for っ on its own.

Is it shi or si, chi or ti?

Both work: shi and si give し, chi and ti give ち, tsu and tu give つ, fu and hu give ふ.

How do I type ん?

Type nn. Before a consonant a single n also works.

How do I type the long vowel mark?

The hyphen key types ー.
